Edd Dumbill is a conference chair, editor, writer and programmer based in California. He takes a broad interest in technology and its application, as an enthusiastic dabbler with credentials.

Holding the position of program chair for the O’Reilly Strata and Open Source Convention (OSCON) conferences, Edd keeps a keen eye on the fields of big data, data science, programming and the web.

Edd is also the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Big Data.

A belief that computers are there to help people has led Edd to create and grow new businesses. Most recently he was the creator of the Expectnation conference management system, and in 1999 a co-founder of the Pharmalicensing online intellectual property exchange.

Edd has contributed to various open source projects, such as Debian and GNOME, and created the DOAP Vocabulary for describing software projects.

Never quite happy when he’s not writing, Edd has authored four books, including O’Reilly’s “Learning Rails”. He writes regularly on Google+ and on his blog at eddology.com.
